This an overall picture of the languages required, the number and type of events that will have simultaneous interpretation and a breakdown of the combinations that we estimate will need to be developed.
Overall Figures (correct as of the 20/09/04) There will be
There will be 4 booths in each room, thus allowing 5 languages to be heard at any one time (the speaker’s language + 4). We will need EN as both source and target language in each booth. As where direct simultaneous interpretation will not be possible, we will usually be using the EN for the relay. For 20 rooms then, there will be a requirement for at least 80 interpreters with EN as the target language. We will be looking to develop 2 teams, to divide the work and facilitate the planning of the timetable Our estimates at this stage (20/09/04), suggest that for DE, FR, ES and IT as target languages, between 50-70 interpreters will be needed (for each). There will be some TR, EL, RU, PL, PT, AR, + several other languages. Though the precise details are still to be determined. The ESF Speakers Programme is now being finalised and by the 1st October, we hope to have a much clearer picture of the exact requirements. Many of the interpreters have been selected, though there is still the need for more in some areas.
