New mailing system for babels

Soon, we'll be changing our mailing system for 'internal' communication between babels volunteers who work on specific projects. For the moment, the system does not make it easy to create, subscribe, unsubscribe, from these mailing lists.
The new system will use mailman, an open-source system that will make it easy to:
-create and maintain lists
-subscribe/unsubscribe from all internal babels mailing lists
-archive all messages on a list.
This new system will make it much easier to have 'new' people work on specific projects: they will be able to read everything that was already discussed on a list.
Important: do not confuse these lists with the info lists on the general babels registration page. These are totally different things.

Hello

Just my two cents. For a group of very busy people some of whom not at ease with computer tools it is complex to have mailing lists, a wiki and a forum. I have heard Yan on this subject and I know the concept is that each has a different purpose. My own experience is that this discourages some persons using any of these tools and that those who do tend to feel their "audience" is dispersed across these media.

I think we are still experimenting, hence the three tools.

However, we can already draw conclusions from experiences in other communities:
- mailing lists are not discussion lists - but would work for (1) very small groups or (2) mailshots.
- forums work very well for creating virtual communities and maintaining this sense of appartenance.

Wikis are a bit immature imho, and if they are very practical when creating, for example, a collaborative document, they are of course useless for discussions.

So I think the Forum should be at the centre of the community, with wiki pages being referred to in forum topics (when discussing a project), and mails for urgencies.

Pour ce qui est du wiki, à mon humble avis ils ne sont pas encore mûrs - totalement inutiles pour une discussion, mais je comprends qu'ils soient pratiques pour créer des documents en commun, de façon collaborative.

Donc, je pense que le Forum devrait être au centre de la communauté, et rien n'empêche l'utilisation annexe du wiki (on peut toujours mettre un lien depuis le forum lorsque l'on travaille sur un projet), et des courriels pour les urgences.

IMPORTANT: these mailing lists are only for people who want to help organize an event. If you want to volunteer only as an interpreter/translator, please use the Babels database instead.
Lists for project organizers are very active, so subscribe at your own risk!

As for the remarks by babelpat, I don't agree. The forum is not always useful to organize real events, especially with people in different countries who don't necessarily have good access to internet (and sometimes not even to internet websites). Mailing lists are not great, but they are very useful.

I've been working on a Communication Protocol for Babels that will try to present clearly the way we could work and what electronic tools we can work with to organize projects.
Babels currently has a website, a database, a forum, and a blog, called the baBeLOG all of which are easily accessible. As of now, it also has a mailing list system for the 'organizers/project-coordinators', a webchat (currently being tested), and a wiki. The wiki's address must be kept secret so that SPAM does not destroy it, but you are free to look at it: http : / / www . babels . org / wiki
Please note that this address has been typed in a way that makes it non recognizable by SPAM robots. Please protect the wiki from spam.

In short, this is how we can use these tools, in this order:
1-mailing list: a new project is discussed
2-wiki: a project description is drafted, prepared, corrected
3-website: the definitive project description is put online
4-database: Babels volunteers receive an email announcing a new project
5-forum: everyone can discuss the project
6-website and baBeLOG: once the project is over, reports are posted online.

This protocol is very logical. It takes a few days to understand how each tool works, but Babels is a virtual network... and we have to work with virtual tools.

En cuanto a lo que dijo babelpat, no estoy de acuerdo. El foro no siempre es util para organizar eventos, en particular cuando uno trabaja con personas en distintos paises en los cuales no necesariamente se tiene un buen acceso a internet (y a veces no se tiene ningun acceso a sitios web). Listas de discusion no son lo ideal, pero son muy utiles.

He estado redactando un Protocolo de Comunicacion para Babels que intentara presentar claramente la manera en que podemos trabajar y las herramientas electronicas que podemos utilizar para organizar proyectos.
De momento, Babels dispone de un sitio internet, una base de datos, un foro virtual, y un blog, que hemos llamado el baBeLOG, y se puede acceder a todo est facilmente. A partir de hoy, tambien dispone de un sistema de listas de discusion para 'organizadores/coordinadores de proyecto', un webchat (estamos haciendo pruebas), y lo que se llama un wiki. 4-base de datos: los voluntarios Babels reciben por email un anuncio sobre el nuevo proyecto

6-sitio internet y baBeLOG: una vez que se acabo el proyecto, se ponen en linea informes.

Este protocolo es muy logico. Toma uno dias entender como funciona cada herramienta, pero Babels es una red virtual... y tenemos que trabajar con herramientas virtuales.

In fact it has more than one database - would it be possible to refer to that particular database as the interpreters' database? As opposed to, say, the planning database, the ESF'04 program database, etc.

EN babelpat is right... up to a point: the ESF'04 program database is not in Babels' hands, and the planning database is not publicly accessible: it was used only for 'internal' purposes.
