Non professional interpreters that took part in the FSE

Postby Liliana Lopez » Sat Dec 27, 2003 6:06 pm

Dear all,
First of all I need to clarify that I am not a professional interpreter and I cannot evaluate the utility of my contribution to this Forum in such terms. Furthermore, Babels seems to me to be much more than a group of translators and interpreters that want to gain experience in their jobs. It is also a platform for engagement and activism in social issues of all kinds. This, more than anything else prompted me to participate.
I imagine that there were and will be in the future plenty of people in the same situation therefore I would like to make some comments and would very much appreciate some feed back.

1) I felt that my presence and time in Paris could have been much more useful. Appart from speaking languages I could have helped in many other things, releasing the few that were very active in the organisation to get more involved with the supervision which would have helped the events to be better covered. This is not just my impression I talked to other people that were dissappointed at the low rate of work they got.

2) Even not being a professional yet (the Forum inspired me to do something about it!) I would like to continue this engagement and co-operation because I imagine the loads of work that a few people have to undertake to maintain Babels.
I think that it would be beneficial to keep the links alive among interested participants and give them opportunities to continue working in some way for and with Babels. I don't know how this could be done because I did not participate in the organisation of the groups that went to Paris, but I would like to get involved and I guess many other people must be feeling the same. How do we do this?

3) lastly I think that the fact of not being connected regularly with Babels, except through this online forum, leaves me with the same sensation I felt in Paris... a sense of being there just circumstancially, I couldn't feel any sense of belonging to Babels until the parade... and five minutes later is was all gone! I would like to know if anyone else felt the same or if i got it all wrong.

All in all I also want to say that the work done by Babel was great, the opportunity and the experience superb!

Many thanks!
Happy New Year!

Bonjour,

Charlotte
