Call for interpreters (Quito)

(Date: 16 June 2004)

Babels at the first Americas Social Forum (ASF), Quito, Ecuador. July 25-30 2004. You are invited to join in.

Ecuador’s social movements, e specially indigenous movements, were among the first to adhere to the World Social Forum (WSF) process, which began in 2001 as a response to the World Economic Forum of Davos, Switzerland. The WSF quickly became the widest democratic space for building alternatives to the neoliberal order, under the common belief that "Another World Is Possible" - a world centered on human beings, not on capital and profit (more on the WSF at www.worldsocialforum.org). This year, the first Americas Social Forum (ASF) will take place in Quito, Ecuador, bringing together non-governmental organizations and social movements from Labrador to Patagonia (more on the ASF at http://www.forosocialamericas.org/i...).

Babels, the global network of volunteer translators and interpreters for the WSF, has been asked to cover the needs in simultaneous interpretation at the ASF for Spanish, Quechua, Portuguese, English and French, all official languages of the pan-American Forum. Created in September 2002 to fulfil the interpreting needs of the first European Social Forum (ESF) in Florence, Babels aims to take an active part in the conceptual and practical development of alternatives to neoliberalism by enabling and facilitating intercultural exchange and communication (more on Babels’ Charter at ’What is Babels?’). Since 2002, Babels’ network has also provided interpretation and translation at the ESF 2003 in Paris and at the WSF 2004 in Mumbai. Babels recently became a member of the International Council of the WSF and is currently involved in the preparation of the 2005 Mediterranean Social Forum (MSF), the ESF 2004 in London and the WSF 2005 in Porto Alegre. The ASF in Quito is its most recent project.

If you wish to take part in this project, are available late July, speak at least two of the languages above, and preferably live in the Americas, sign up as a volunteer!

If you are not a member, please register at www.babels.org/registration, and then check the box FSA-ASF.

As usual, Babels will reimburse interpreters’ and translators’ travel expenses to/from and in Quito, and will provide lodging and most meals. Because it is important to keep costs down, preference will be given to interpreters and translators who live in Ecuador or neighboring countries, or at least in the Americas.

If you are not available, please forward this message to others! We particularly need interpreters of indigenous languages.

See you in Quito !

Thank you,

Babels at FSA-ASF
